First Indian South African made High Commissioner to India |
For the first time in 30 years since getting freedom from Apartheid, an Indian South African has been appointed as the country`s High Commissioner to India. Professor Anil Sooklal`s appointment as High Commissioner was announced on Sunday June 30, in Durban city of Kwazulu-Natal province in South Africa. In his speech, the veteran Indian South African academician who has played a leading role in South African politics acknowledged that being nominated to the post is a highly competitive and political process. Prof. Sooklal said the South African Cabinet of Ministers and other interested parties, including businesses, recommend his name, but ultimately the nomination has to be confirmed by the President of South Africa. The High Commissioner designate said he was very grateful to president Cyril Ramaphosa for signing his appointment as high commissioner to India, Bangladesh and Nepal. It may be noted that President Cyril Ramaphosa was elected for the second term post the elections in May 2024. Prof. Sooklal said countries with sizeable Indian community do pick and appoint people of Indian origin for such positions. Prof. Sooklal said he was confident he could serve the interests of South Africa well as he has an understanding of India and Indian people. India has to confirm his appointment whereafter he will travel to India to present credentials. Prof. Sooklal is a highly educated academic with a Bachelor`s Degreee in Oriental History and Religious Studies, Master`s Degree in Religious Studies, Ph. D. in Religious Studies as well as Oriental History. People of Indian Origin in South Africa have welcomed his appointment. He is being felicitated by the community at various events.
