In another step to normalise ties, India and China are expected to iron out details to resume direct flights. These flights stopped first in early 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and after that due to border tensions. Officials say this will promote travel and trade. IndiGo and Air India from India side will reconnect New Delhi and Shanghai. India and China are also sorting out slot allocation and ground handling at airports like Mumbai and Guangzhou. Also on hand are issues such as visa facilitation, involving multiple stakeholders. Both countries will not change existing bilateral air rights agreement. Reports said the resumption of flights may later be expanded to entry of Chinese low-cost carriers into India, serving cities like Chennai and Mumbai.
