India brings 26/11 Mumbai terror massacre mastermind Rana from USA
The USA and India have demonstrated a landmark show of cooperation against terrorism. In what’s clearly a victory for India’s relentless efforts, the US government extradited and India’s top investigation agency, National Investigation Agency (NIA), has successfully brought back, arrested and charged on the Indian soil Pakistani origin Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the key conspirator in the deadly 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Rana was transported in a special aircraft that landed at Air Force Station in New Delhi on 10th April 2025. USA President Donald Trump had announced in February 2025 during the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that his administration had approved the extradition.
Rana was held in judicial custody in the US after India’s NIA filed cases against Rana under the India-US Extradition Treaty. Rana’s various litigations and appeals, including an emergency application before the U.S. Supreme Court, were rejected. India’s case for extradition was supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office for in California, U.S. Department of State and other agencies.
India’s NIA investigation team at the Delhi airport formally arrested Rana after completing all the necessary legal and medical formalities under due process of law. Rana was then produced in Patiala House Court at night in Delhi with high security across the capital and remanded to judicial custody. Rana is a Canadian national of Pakistani origin who mostly lived and operated from Chicago in the USA. Rana is accused by India of conspiring with David Coleman Headley aka Daood Gilani and operatives of designated terrorist organisations Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HUJI), along with other Pakistan-based co-conspirators, to carry out the devastating terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008 that killed more than 160 persons and injured more than 220 injured in the deadly attacks. Indian government has appointed Advocate Narendra Mann as the Special Public Prosecutor in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case. He will serve for three years or until the trial concludes. Mann was Special Public Prosecutor for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the Delhi High Court for over 8 years, handling major criminal cases. Rana has also been provided a lawyer.
