India may cut tariffs on US imports and vice versa
Post the meeting between new US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, DC in February 2025, it had become clear that the USA and India will not engage in tariff war. Reports say and officials confirm that there are bilateral talks to avoid a tariff stand-off. India will avoid tariffs on US impots in phases, and US would respond positively on the same. This is the implication of MAGA and MIGA when Trump and Modi met. Made America Great Again and Make India Great Again are now being synergized to not hurt trade and overall ties. Reports said India is contemplating scaling down tariffs on half of U.S. imports worth $23 billion initially. This is being negotiated. This would be a landmark achievement in the trade war that started way back in the mid 1980s. U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened to impose reciprocal worldwide tariffs from April 2. This would apply to several nations, who all scrambled to deal with the Trump Administration. India may lower and give up tariffs on more than 50% of impots from USA. Some say that the specifics of the deal were discussed during the visit to USA by Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal with his US counterpart. Indian officials say that India is revisiting its tariff policy viz all nations, at least the major ones. Barriers to cross border trade have been the biggest stumbling block for consensus at GATT and later WTO.
