Indian Regulator tells Telcos to do voice & SMS only plans |
The Indian Telecom Authority Regulator, TRAI, has mandated that telecommunications companies, specifically mobile phone operators, offer voice and text only plans to consumers in India as some may not need internet connectivity. Following the tariff rules amendment, telecom operators including Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel offered new voice and SMS only plans for prepaid users in India. TRAI said that not all customers require data. It may be noted that India is considered to be the cheapest market in the world for users for mobile calls and data. Airtel has introduced a new Rs 499 plan, which offers unlimited voice calls, 900 SMS with 84 days validity. Yet another offer is for Rs 1,959 plan, giving prepaid users unlimited voice calls, 3,600 SMS and is valid for 365 days. Jio website also talks of two plans. First, Rs 458 plan valid for 84 days with unlimited voice calls and 1,000 SMS. Second plan offers for Rs 1,958 unlimited voice calls and 3,600 SMSs for 365 or a whole year.
