Modi backed Om Birla is elected Speaker of Lok Sabha of Indian Parliament
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) scored its first Parliamentary victory in the first session of Parliament on 26 June 2024 when Member of Parliament Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of Lok Sabha for the second consecutive time. Birla defeated the Congress party led INDIA bloc`s K Suresh via voice vote. Upon his historic re-election, INDI Aliiance leader and leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Prime Minister Modi, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju escorted Om Birla to Speaker`s chair. Om Birla, three-time BJP MP, was re-elected via voice vote in a rare contest. Birla was seen smiling at he again sat in the Speaker`s chair. After an acrimonious and pitched Indian general elections in April-May this year, it was a picture moment when Modi and Rahul Gandhi also exchanged smiles and shook hands. Modi was at his usual best, mentioning Birla`s "sweet smile” in his praise of the Speaker. Rahul graciously congratulated the new Speaker and made it a point to mention that the Speaker will be the "final arbiter of that voice” that elected him and through them of the people that elect Members of Parliament. Rahul said the Opposition-led INDIA bloc would like to assist Om Birla in doing his work and for the House to "function often and well.” Rahul added that the voice of the Opposition should be allowed to be represented in the lower House of Parliament.
