Modi hints at India making passenger aircraft soon |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 27 said that the days of `Made-in-India` passenger aircraft were not far. He said the aviation market in India had been expanding rapidly and the country would require thousands of aircraft and young people as a workforce to meet the growing passenger demand. He said, “India is currently importing aircraft, but the day when ordinary Indians will fly in `Made-in-India` passenger planes is not far off. Those wearing hawai chappals too should take a `hawai jahaj”. Modi addressed a public rally after inaugurating the modern greenfield airport at Shivamogga. The Indian Prime Minister said investors from across the world wanted to come and invest in India. Modi made it a point to refer to the Tata-owned carrier for the largest order for 470 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing. Modi said that prior to his government formation in 2014, Air India was often discussed for negative reasons, and the domestic airline part was often recognized for scams during the Congress-led UPA government rule. The Prime Minister said Karnataka state was undertaking "double engine” governance, taking development to villages, tier 2 and 3 cities of Karnataka. Karnataka, ruled by the BJP, goes to polls later in 2023.
