Modi on International Yoga Day says Yoga makes one whole again |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 11th International Yoga Day on 21st June 2025 in the coastal city of Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh state. He described the ancient Indian wellness practice of Yoga as a “pause button that humanity needs to breathe, balance, and become whole again”. India celebrated Yoga under the theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.” One hundred tourist destinations and 50 cultural sites were chosen to celebrate what has become a fitness and wellness practice for the whole world. Yoga dates back to Indian scriptures thousands of years old. Modi said that yoga has become an integral part of life for tens of millions of people around the world, transcending boundaries and evolving into a global movement for health, peace, and harmony. At the event in Vishakhapatnam, officials said some 500,000 people participated the mass yoga session along a 26-kilometre stretch from Ramakrishna Beach to Bhogapuram. Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and State Information Technology Minister Nara Lokesh also participated.
Prime Minister Modi said a record 175 countries supported India’s proposal to the United Nations in 2014 to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day. He highlighted the universal nature of yoga, noting its presence from the Sydney Opera House to the peaks of Mount Everest and across oceans. Modi said Yoga transcends place, background, age, or ability, and had become a path to holistic well-being, mental clarity, and spiritual strength. He called it ancient Indian gift that continues to heal and inspire the world. Chief Minister Naidu said Yoga is now practiced in 175 countries and at 1.2 million locations. Naidu noted that artificial intelligence is making yoga more accessible and bringing it closer to everyone. On 20th June 2025, 22,000 tribal students set a Guinness World Record by doing Yoga asana of Surya Namaskar. One hundred forty-four thousand yoga instructors had registered in the Yoga Andhra movement.
