Modi’s 5-nation visit focus on fighting terror, collaboration on critical minerals |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a major visit across three global regions to rally support to fight terror and collaborate security and critical minerals. Namibia and Ghana in Africa, Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, as well as Argentina and Brazil in South America will host Modi. He will finally address the BRICS Summit in Brazil. Top on the agenda is to rally support for India to denounce Pakistan’s terrorist support to in the Pahalgam attack and aso for action against terrorism. The visit 2nd through 9th July will see him address BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro 6th and 7th July where he will also focus l ramping trade and investment with leaders of five countries. Both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President XI Jinping will be skipping the summit. India chairs the summit in 2026. Too officials of India’s Ministry of External Affairs briefed media saying BRICS declaration would imbibe India’s call for concerted global action against terrorism. BRICS includes Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
BRICS will focus on cooperation among the Global South and it’s issues. Modi will be meeting some of these leaders for the first time since Operation Sindoor. In Namibia, Argentina and Brazil, India hopes to discuss cooperation on rare earth metals of which there are sizeable reserves. These include lithium, cobalt, graphite and tantalum needed for India’s energy transition and green technologies. Defense cooperation among Global South is a firm agenda. Brazil has also expressed interest in acquiring defence equipment from India, including secure communications systems, offshore patrol vessels, the Akash air defence system, coastal surveillance systems, and Garuda artillery guns, he said. Modi’s visit Ghana is first in 30 years by an Indian head of Government. Bilateral economic cooperation is at $3 billion, with the balance in Ghana’s favour as India is a large importer of gold. Modis visit marks one by an Indian PM to Namibia after 27 years. India will sign an agreement on inter-operability of India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) system, officials said. Modi will also address Parliaments in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago and Namibia.
