The 11-year wait is over as Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) party won the elections on 8th February 2025 to form the government in Indian capital of Delhi. BJP returns to run Delhi after 27 years. The BJP has won 48 seats in the 70-member legislative assembly, while the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 22 seats, according to data from the Election Commission of India (EC). A jubilant Prime Minister Modi wrote on X that "Development wins, good governance triumphs," promising to leave "no stone unturned" in developing Delhi. AAP wrested control of Delhi in 2014. Prior to that the Indian National Congress (INC) ruled Delhi for 15 years. Congress has been literally decimated in this election, and this is bound to impact the party`s falling image across the country. The BJP and AAP ran a fiery pitch during electioneering with Modi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal calling each other names while their parties indulged in mudslinging. For Modi`s BJP this has huge political symbolism as Delhi is the country`s capital. BJP has been on a climb after recent election successes in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. AAP as a party and its leaders have faced several challenges recently, with leaders embroiled in corruption allegations which they have denied. At least three top leaders including former Chief Minister Kejriwal lost the election. The defeat is a big blow to the AAP. The only state it governs is Punjab, but the Delhi defeat is bound to impact the beleaguered party in the state and its future. In a video message on X, Kejriwal said he and his party "humbly accepted" the verdict of the people and congratulated the BJP on its win.
