India Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a historic two-day visit to Bangladesh from 26th March to celebrate 50th year of Independence of the nation created with the intervention of India. It is noteworthy that the visit is first outside the country by Modi since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It underlines the strategic relationship with the neighbour, especially with the current government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who received him at the airport. Modi will commemorate three epochal events, including Mujib Borsho, the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh, and 50 years of Bangladesh`s war of liberation. Sheikh Hasina is the daughter of the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, who fought for liberation. Prime Minister Modi arrived to a rousing welcome at the airport by the Indian Diaspora in Dhaka. During the visit, the Prime Minister will attend the National Day programme of Bangladesh as the guest of honour. He will also call on Bangladesh President Md. Abdul Hamid. Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr A.K. Abdul Momen will call on Modi. Modi had last visited Bangladesh in 2015. The National Day celebrations of Bangladesh in Dhaka will also commemorate the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Prime Minister will also visit Bangabandhu`s Samadhi in Tungipara to pay his respect.
