Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met in Dhaka on 27th March 2021, wrapping up a 2-day visit by Modi that marked expanded relations and cooperation between the neighbouring nations and could have a positive impact for Modi`s party in the fiery elections in Indian state of West Bengal. Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said both the leaders discussed ways to strengthen the 50-year-old diplomatic ties between their countries. India and Bangladesh signed five agreements in areas ranging from trade to disaster management. Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina lauded India`s neighbourhood first policy. Indian Prime Minister Modi thanked her for erecting a war memorial in her country in recognition of contribution of the Indian soldiers killed during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. Both leaders laid the foundation stone for the memorial. Shringla said it was decided that transmission lines of Bangladesh`s Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant will be developed by Indian companies under the line of credit. The project is worth over $1 billion. Earlier on 26th March, Prime Minister Modi addressed the National Day celebration of Bangladesh at the Parade square in Dhaka and paid rich tributes to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib, the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina`s father.
