Plasma therapy for Corona cure pushed in India |
Plasma therapy as a cure for covid 19 patients has gained momentum in India. After National capital Delhi, the south eastern state of Telangana has also sent a written request to the Indian Council of Medical Research to permit the state to start plasma therapy on patients. The state has also formed a committee to study the efficacy of the treatment. A website is also being developed to enlist plasma donors who were cured of covid 19 disease. Protocols are being worked out to make it standard therapy to cure covid 19 cases. The Centre for Excellence for Pharmco-ImmunoTherapy under AIIMS, Mangalagiri, has started working with state medical colleges on treatment protocols using plasma therapy. When there is no known cure to treat coronavirus, anecdotally it is proved that blood from people, who have recovered from the disease, can be a rich source of antibodies - proteins made by the immune system to attack the virus. It would be tried as a treatment for hospitalised patients who had a moderate form of the disease and had trouble breathing, but not for those who are in advanced stages of the disease. Meanwhile, India is also working on testing up to 50,000 people a day by the end of the month -- using the Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction or RT-PCR test -- as the country approaches the May 3 deadline for the end of the ongoing lockdown, resulting in a potential increase in infections.
