President of India confers Padma Awards |
Padma awards are one of the highest civilian awards in the country. Conferred in three categories The Padma Vibhushan, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri. President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday conferred the most prestigious awards on prominent personalities at a civil investiture ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan. This time, South African politician Pravin Gordhan was also among the recipients of the Padma Bhushan for his distinguished service of highest order. Others who were conferred the award were Malayalam actor Mohanlal, former Cisco head John Chambers, Parliamentarians Hukumdev Narayan Yadav, Kariya Munda and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. Renowned journalist Kuldip Nayar was also awarded Padma Bhushan posthumously. Padma Shri was conferred on various personalities including Chess player Harika Dronavalli, Table Tennis player Sharath Kamal, Social Workers Bhagirathi Devi and Muktaben Dagli, Actor Prabhudeva, Music Director Shankar Mahadevan, former civil servant S Jaishankar, Agriculturist Rajkumari Devi and Babulal Dahiya, Archaeologist Dilip Chakravarty and Hematologist Mammen Chandy. This year, 112 personalities were selected for the Padma awards, which was announced on the eve of the Republic Day.
