A Indian origin Muslim born in Uganda and partly raised in South Africa, son of famous Indian American filmmaker Mira Nair, could become first South Asian descent mayor of New York City. Thirty-three year old Zohran Mamdani is a three time state assemblyman from New York. Mamdani defeated 67-year old seasoned politician and former Governor of the state, Andrew Cuomo, in the Democratic Party primary on 25th June 2025. Zohran was born on 18 October 1991 in Kampala, Uganda, to Professor Mahmood Mamdani, an extremely respected political thinker, and Mira Nair. Mamdani is seen as a rising star in New York City politics. He is a Democrat socialist and polled an overwhelming number of votes. Mamdani’s campaig focused on New York’s spiraling affordability crisis. He benefitted from creating a diverse coalition from brownstone Brooklyn to the immigrant enclaves of Queens. New York is historically known as a gateway to America and a melting pot of immigrants. Mamdani is credited with first Democratic party success since President Trump returned to the White House.
