Waqf Amendment Bill passed in Upper House of Indian Parliament |
The Indian Parliament passed the landmark Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, with the upper house of Rajya Sabha also approving it on 4th April 2025. After a 12-hour debate overnight and into wee hours of the morning, the Upper House cleared the Bill with 128 members voting in favour of it while 95 members voted against. The lower house, Lok Sabha, had already approved the Bill the previous day. Moving the bill, the Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the Bill has been brought after a detailed consultation with the stakeholders as well as in the Joint Parliamentary Committee. He urged the opposition parties to support it. There was ample acrimony in the debate, with both sides taking their stands and even delving into history. The government and Members of Parliament have assured that the rules for the implementation of the law will be framed properly.
