Actor Aziz Ansari’s acclaimed Netflix series, “Master of None,” Vijal Patel’s “black-ish,” and director Leslee Udwin’s “Independent Lens: India’s Daughter” have scored a win at the 75th Annual Peabody Awards. While “Master of None” and “black-ish” won in the entertainment category, “Independent Lens: India’s Daughter’s” won in the documentary section. “black-ish,” by Indian American writer Patel, Peabody judges noted, is “a bright, boisterous, big-hearted comedy about an affluent African-American family working overtime to keep it real. ‘black-ish’ doesn’t let jokes get in the way of insights about race, class, guns and other hot-button topics that most popular entertainment shows scarcely mention.”“Independent Lens: India’s Daughter,” a documentary about the brutal rape of a medical student in Delhi and the consequent protests across the country, elicited this response from the judges: “The internationally infamous 2012 gang rape and murder of Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old medical student, in Delhi is the impetus for this unflinching, deeply unflattering examination of the misogyny embedded in Indian society.”
