Maldives lauds remarkable Swachh Bharat, says ongoing internal political transition no turmoil
Maldives Minister of State for Environment and Energy, Abdul Matheen Mohamed, complimented India's remarkable job and leadership for achieving 39 to 94 percent rural sanitation in just 4 years, adding developing countries learned a lot from India's example, particularly of engaging people in the sanitation movement beyond just a government program. Speaking to PIO TV on the sidelines of the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention marking 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma, the Maldives Minister also pointed out that the archipelago of nearly 1200 islands had achieved Open Defecation Free status in 1990s.In the last 5 years, Maldives increased from 35 to 75 percent public access to modern infrastructure like pumping stations and treatment plants, also clean tap water to homes rose from 25 to 65 percent. Using solar power, rain water harvesting and technology, cost of drinking water to homes was cut by 30 percent. On the recent elections and the formation of a new government, the Minister emphasised that Maldivians by nature were fiercely independent and historically fought for freedom and rights. He said the peace and environment loving people would ensure a smooth transition under a multi-party democratic process.
