Bollywood doyen Manoj Kumar no more at 87 |
Legendary Bollywood actor- filmmaker Manoj Kumar died at 87 in Mumbai on 4 April 2025. He had been admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after suffering heart-related complications. Manoj Kumar will be most remembered for the patriotic characters he played in epic movies like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), and Purab Aur Paschim (1970). He won Bollywood’s highest honour, the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2015. He also received the Padma Shri in 1992 for his contributions to Bollywood. Because of the roles he played he was also popularly called ‘Bharat Kumar.’ But, the veteran actor also made a mark with classics like Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, and Kranti. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted old pictures of the legendary actor on social media and wrote “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations”. Born in now Pakistan, Manoj Kumar’s birth name is Harikrishan Giri Goswami.
