Friday saw the release of two big ticket films on the Indian box office. First is Deepika Padukone`s first production film, Chhapaak. The story is based on the life of a pretty teenager Laxmi Agarwal, whose face was ruined by acid flung by a much older spurned suitor. The Meghna Gulzar directorial recreates this story, through Deepika Padukone`s Malti. Chhapaak scores because deepika comes through with a solid, realised performance. The portrayal reflects a mix of pain, anger, resignation, and finally, arriving at some kind of resolution. Padukone is given an interesting supporting cast. Massey as the ornery, impatient NGO-type. But so present is Padukone right through, owning a couple of terrific, moving moments, in which we see what`s she`s feeling only through her eyes. Her Malti embodies the film`s anti-patriarchy stance, minus shrillness or preachiness. Drama without dreaded melodrama. Second release of this week is Ajay Devgn`s Tanhaji. The film is about the battle of Sinhagad which was of strategic importance at that time. Ajay Devgn plays Subedar Tanhaji Malusare who is the trusted lieutenant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji sends him to reclaim the fort from Auragzeb who sends Udaybhan, played by Saif Ali Khan.
