Germany to manufacture submarines in India |
Germany and India are close to inking a $5.2 billion deal for production of six diesel submarines for the Indian Navy. Reportedly, this is the main item on the agenda of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius` two-day visit to India. The submarines` manufacture in India will boost India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s `Make in India` initiative to increase domestic defense production. At a time of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Russia`s defense industry is stressed and has made India look for new partners to supply military hardware. India and Germany are at a stage to sign a preliminary agreement during Boris Pistorius` two-day visit. Reportedly, France had given up last year on the project but Germany is hopeful of taking up the project. The German Minister had informed German media to expect conversations between German and Indian executives regarding the signing of the submarine agreement that would deepen and the strategic partnership between Germany and India. Pistorius said that his country wanted to become a reliable ally of New Delhi in terms of defense and wean India off its reliance on Russia for security. In light of the growing security threat from China, Germany is eager to strengthen its defense relations with India. The Indo-Pacific area is significant for security, freedom of passage, and global economic concerns, according to Berlin.
