Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that rules the federal government and many states in India with allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on 28 May 2023 inaugurated and stepped into a new Indian Parliament building that symbolises and coincides with 75 years of Indian independence. But, representatives of 22 opposition parties abstained from the event. In his inaugural address from inside the sleek, resplendent new building, Prime Minister Modi said the building marked a milestone of achievements and the beginning of a era in which India would celebrate its 100th anniversary of independence as a developed nation. In her address, the President of India, Mrs. Draupadi Murmu, expresses happiness that the Prime Minister as the executive head of the country in a Parliamentary democracy inaugurated the building. Modi said the building and a new central vista that his government is ambitiously building is a representation of the "aspirations" of 1.4 billion Indians. The Modi government is literally redoing central Delhi, also known as the Lutyens area named after the French architect who designed it. New buildings for Ministries of the central government and a new prime minister residence will be built. The focus of the 35-minute speech by the prime minister was on presenting a "new India" that had abandoned a "slave mentality" and was progressing. Modi used the term "new" more than 40 times. Modi called the new Parliament building more than just a structure.
