US, India discuss manufacturing military systems |
Reports quoting a US defence department officials said that the US and India are actively discussing the possibility of creating military systems. The discussions include the possibility of developing military equipment for ISR and ground-based conventional combat. A reciprocal defense purchase pact with India is also on the table. At a meeting hosted by the esteemed Hudson Institute on Tuesday, Siddharth Iyer, Director for South Asia Policy, Office of the Secretary of Defence, said "We are actively negotiating with the Indian government to produce ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance)-related military systems, as well as conventional ground warfare, of course. And when they`re ready, we`ll have more to say about that." Iyer claimed that the negotiations between India and the US to finalize the security of supply agreement, which would simplify the process by which defense corporations would acquire the supplies they need, are doing well. The establishment of a reciprocal defense procurement agreement is also progressing quickly in the new context where the bilateral military cooperation relationship is a high priority for the US defence department, called the Pentagon. During the recent talks in New Delhi on the sidelines of the G20 summit, US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the GE engine deals for fighter jets. Iyer said the deal was an important indication of growing cooperation and collaboration in defence.
