Flash floods kill 30 in Andhra and Telangana |
Torrential rains have pounded India`s neighbouring states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on the 13th and 14th of October, submerging low-lying areas, triggering roof and wall collapse, prompting the evacuation of some 80,000 people to relief camps, and claiming at least 30 dead. Heavy rains killed 17 persons in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, and its suburbs and persons caused a lake in the middle of the city to overflow onto the roads. Three died in a house collapse in Nagarkurnool district. In Andhra Pradesh. There were reports also of two persons getting washed away in flash floods at Mylardevpally in Falaknuma area though not officially confirmed. Hyderabad received unprecedented rain in the last 24 hours. The Singapore township on the outskirts of the city received a maximum of 30.6 cm of rain in a span of 12 hours until 10 pm. Indian Army helicopters were pressed into service to airlift people from submerged areas. At several places. Municipal authorities deployed boats to rescue people from their flooded houses. As many as 40 relief camps have been set up where food and water are being arranged for nearly 80,000 people.
