Hydrogel to solve India water retention in rainfed areas |
Agriculture contributes majorly in the Indian economy and forms a major part in exports as well as consumer goods in the Indian market. Every year many crops are destroyed due to droughts as rain as well as ground water level is decreasing. To solve this problem, water retention in the soil is required. One Indian innovator has created a feasible and practical means of developing eco friendly, biodegradable, economic, yet effective hydrogel system. This system will use, easily available bio-wastes such as coconut coir, sugarcane bagasse or fibrous cereal bran in conjunction with natural polysaccharides and bio-safe cross-linkers in accordance with the concepts of green chemistry. These hydrogels will help in conserving water, preventing toxicity to farming land, better crop yield, enhancing soil quality and prevention of leaching of nutrients. In addition, this technology of hydrogel synthesis is simple, yet easy to scale up and does not require expensive equipment/instrumental set up. The biodegradable hydrogel technology will help in Economical disposal of plant wastes like coconut coir and sugarcane bagasse. And Saving of water inputs by 40-50% needed for farming commercial crops and food crops.
