India, Australia in Cricket World Test Championship finals |
A tame draw against Australia on March 13 was enough for India to qualify for the World Test Championship final, much thanks to a more exciting finish in New Zealand. The result in Ahmedabad also meant India won the four-test series 2-1 and reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which it has held since 2017. The 2-1 series margin could only put India into the WTC final if Sri Lanka failed to win its two-test series in New Zealand 2-0, and the Kiwis managed to win the first test on the last ball in a thrilling finish at Christchurch. This meant India will face Australia again in the World Test Championship final at the Oval in London from June 7-11. The fifth day`s play in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia was a logical extension of the first four days. The bat continued to hold sway with Australia declaring their second innings at 175 for 2. The declaration came 10 minutes and two overs before the final hour. Both captains then decided to call off the match. Australia had confirmed its qualification after winning the third test against India in Indore by nine wickets. India had earlier won the first two tests, in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs, and in Delhi by six wickets, to maintain its grasp on the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
