India braving COVID-19 second wave |
Of the 3,417 fatalities in India, 700 came from Maharashtra, 400 from Delhi, and about 300 from Uttar Pradesh. Maharashtra after being severely hit by the deadly virus showed signs of slowdown as the number of infections reduced. New cases in Maharashtra dropped below 60,000 for the first time in five days on Sunday. The official data showed 56,647 new cases and 669 deaths on Sunday, where the daily death count also dropped below 700 after two days. Some states are registering more cases and are imposing strict lockdowns. Haryana joined several other states that have been forced to reimpose lockdown in a desperate bid to check the surge amid a grievous shortage of hospital beds, medicines and oxygen for patients. Haryana imposed a week-long lockdown in the entire state beginning 3rd May till early morning of 10 May. Covid lockdown in Delhi - due to end 5 am on 3rd May - has been extended by a week, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted on 1st May. The national capital has been under lockdown since April 19, as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) scrambles to contain a fresh wave of infections and a positivity rate that remains over 30 percent. This is the second extension of the lockdown in the national capital. Amidst the second wave the acceptance for the vaccine also increased as more and more people register for the corona vaccination. India on May 1st opened vaccines for all people from the age of 18 up. On the first day of registration, more than 8.7 million people enrolled themselves for the much-awaited jab. As per the officials the CoWIN portal saw 55,000 hits per second on the platform.
