India gives Corona financial aid to 390 mn poor |
Millions of Indians are facing tough times during the ongoing nationwide lockdown in India. The poor and migrants are especially toiling hard to survive the duration of the lockdown. At such a time, Indian government has been able to hold the hands of the needy and around 390 million poor and needy people received financial assistance of 4.5 billion dollars under the Indian government`s Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package. The package was announced by the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in March this year to protect the poor people from the impact of the lockdown imposed due to COVID 19. As part of the package, the Government announced free food grains and cash payment to women, poor senior citizens and farmers. The implementation of the package is being continuously monitored by Central and State governments to provide relief to the poor people. Fintech and digital technology have been employed for swift and efficient transfer of financial assistance to the beneficiaries. Under the various components of the package, over 2.15 billion dollars were allocated towards payment of the first instalment of PM-KISAN to 81.9 million beneficiaries. Besides, one thousand 405 crore rupees disbursed to 28.2 million old age persons, widows and disabled persons. A financial support of 459 million dollars was provided to more than two crore building and construction workers.
