India tells China to ensure border peace for normal ties |
Amid the ongoing border tension between India and China, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar said on November 10 that the relationship between the two countries cannot be normal unless there is “peace and tranquillity” in the border areas. The Indian Minister made it clear that there is no ambiguity in India`s message to China, adding that the present state of relations is not even in Beijing`s own interest. India and China have been locked in a long-standing border standoff in eastern Ladakh since May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake area. The tension flared after the fierce clashes in the Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020, when at least 20 Indian and four Chinese troops were killed. The two countries have continued military-level talks to resolve the standoff in Ladakh without major breakthroughs. Referring to the Galwan Valley clashes, Jaishankar said what happened in 2020 was “an attempt by one party, and we know which one, to depart from agreements and understandings and that is at the heart of the issue”. He said that though some of those issues have been resolved, there are some which still need to be worked upon. The Minister said he believes that there will be a realization in China that the present situation is not even in China`s interest.
