Modi in Nepal for Buddha Purnima |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Nepal on May 16th for a brief visit to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, and also hold comprehensive talks with his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba to expand bilateral cooperation in multiple areas, including in hydropower, development and connectivity. Modi offered prayers at the sacred Maya Devi temple in Nepal on the occasion of Buddha Purnima and said he felt blessed, hoping that Lord Buddha would bless all and make the planet peaceful and prosperous. He was accompanied by his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba during his visit to the historic temple, the birth place of Gautam Buddha. The Leaders paid their respects at the Marker Stone inside the temple premises, which pinpoints the exact birth spot of Lord Buddha. They attended the pooja conducted as per Buddhist rituals. The two Prime Ministers also lit lamps near the Ashoka Pillar located adjacent to the temple. The pillar was erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, along with Prime Minister of Nepal Hon`ble Sher Bahadur Deuba, performed the shilanyas ceremony for construction of the India International Centre for Buddhist Culture and Heritage in the Lumbini Monastic Zone, Lumbini, Nepal. Prime Minister Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Deuba held a bilateral meeting in Lumbini. During the meeting, they exchanged views on Nepal-India cooperation and matters of mutual interests, according to a statement issued by Nepal`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Post foundation laying of Centre for Buddhist culture & heritage belonging to International Buddhist Confederation, PM Modi along with Nepal PM Sher Bahadur Deuba participated in slogan chanting in Lumbini in Nepal. PM Modi received a warm welcome by the Indian community in Lumbini, Nepal.
