Red alert in Kerala due to lashing rains |
As rains continue to lash across Kerala days ahead of the expected onset of the Southwest monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on May 15thissued a red alert in five districts of the state for 15th and 16th May indicating extremely heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts for the 15th of May. A red alert has been issued in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur districts for16th May. Except for Kasaragod, other districts in the state were on an orange alert for the 15th of May. As of now, the rivers are not overflowing. Special directions have been issued to hilly districts and hazard analysts have been asked to monitor the situation closely. All departments concerned have been alerted and people from danger-prone areas will be evacuated without delay if necessary. Most parts of Ernakulam city were inundated on May 15th due to heavy rainfall which lasted the whole night. Two camps have been opened in Ernakulam city to house families affected by waterlogging. Meanwhile, Assam has been ravaged by flash floods and massive landslides in several places, snapping rail and road links from other parts of the state. Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that landslides have been reported and nearly 25,000 people have been affected by floods across five districts in Assam.
