Miss World champions menstrual hygiene; India gets 100% compostable sanitary pad |
India unveiled its first 100% government certified compostable sanitary napkin as Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar walked the heart of New Delhi in Connaught Place with 300 teenage girls on World Menstrual Hygiene Day 28th May 2018. The global event was marked with the announcement that Aakar Innovation's 'Anandi Eco Plus' sanitary napkins will be given free to all 6,000 teenage girls in 30 schools of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). Chairman NDMC, Naresh Kumar, said on the heels of the World Environment Day that NDMC moves up a notch higher not just as the smartest in small cities but also with an important contributing to save environment from the hazard created by disposal of hundreds of thousands of pads every month. 100% compostable pads are said to turn to manure in wet pits in less than 6 months, versus others that contaminate soil and water with chemicals and take hundreds of years to biodegrade and could still show up in plants and water. A group of marathoners led by Guinness Book World Record Holder Roop Batela jogged nearly 11 kilometres wearing T-shirts marking World Menstrual Hygiene Day. At NDMC Convention Centre, Manushi conducted a quiz and interactive session with teenage boys and girls. Manushi ended with an important message of two words "CHARCHA AUR CHUPPI", that is one must talk (do charcha) and break the silence (chuppi) on menstrual hygiene.
