FICCI, established in 1927 by GD Birla and Purushottam Das Thakurdas on Mahatma Gandhi`s advice, is the largest, oldest and the apex business organisation in India. It is a non-government, not-for-profit organisation. FICCI draws its membership from private and public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs. The chamber has an indirect membership of over 2,500,000 companies from various regional chambers of commerce. It is involved in sector-specific business policy consensus-building, and business promotion and networking. Headquartered in New Delhi, it has presence in 12 states in India and 8 countries. Pankaj Patel was elected President of the FICCI for 2017 at its 89th annual general meeting on 17 December 2016. He is Chairman and Managing Director of Cadila Healthcare Ltd., Gujarat, a leading pharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of healthcare therapies in over 50 countries worldwide. The company is the fourth largest pharmaceutical company in India, with INR 54.7 billion revenue and over 13,000 employees (2015). It is a significant manufacturer of generic drugs. Patel is actively involved in various educational institutions and is on the advisory committees and academic councils of several educational institutions.
