Jantar Mantar Removed as Delhi Protest Site, 3 New Venues Named

The Indian government has removed Jantar Mantar in Delhi as a designated protest site. The government now deems Jantar Mantar a high-security area in central Delhi.

The Indian Home Ministry has designated 3 new locations for protests and sit-ins in the national capital, based on a committee's recommendations. The venues are Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi.

The development came amid protests by the Opposition bloc INDIA and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in central Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the special intensive revision (SIR) controversy.

The government’s decision on new designated sites has come under criticism by opposition political parties.

Jantar Mantar is close to several important government buildings: Parliament, the President's and Prime Minister’s offices. The opposition would like free-wheeling protests without police intervention. Large gatherings have become violent and disrupt official and public movement and operations.

Delhi Police said a set of standard operating procedures (SOP) for holding protests at the three new locations would be issued separately.
