First transgender pop band
Y-Films and India’s first transgender pop band, the 6 Pack Band, created history June 20 by winning the coveted Cannes Grand Prix Glass Lion at the Cannes Lions Festival. The unique innovation, in collaboration with Mindshare Mumbai and Brooke Bond Red Label, a first of its kind ever for an Indian campaign, won the award for its extraordinary campaign around gender rights and outreach. This particular category of the Cannes Lions Festival awards creative work that celebrates culture-shifting creativity and addresses and impacts gender inequality, imbalance or injustice. Over 30 brands competed from across the world, including four from India, but the unique Band initiative that highlighted the hidden talent of the ‘Hijra’ (transgender) community of India, was chosen as winner for the impact it has had in battling prejudice and discrimination against the transgender community. With a population of over 1.9 million transgender people in India, who find employment and even social acceptance an impossible challenge, the “Hum Hain Happy” song and its follow-up videos present a positive, optimistic and change-oriented mindset for India.
