Jim McGovern shows support for Hindu Americans at Sri Lakshmi Temple
USA Congressman Jim McGovern participated in an event to show solidarity with Hindu Americans during the last weekend of March 2026. At the Sri Lakshmi Temple in Ashland, Massachusetts, Congressman McGovern reaffirmed his commitment to protecting communities, upholding fundamental freedoms, and cherishing the values that define America’s pluralism. The event was hosted and chaired by Ramesh Vishwanath Kapur, president of the U.S.-India Security Council. The event was organized in collaboration with Dr. Lakshmi Thalanki, President of the chapter in Massachusetts state for Americans 4 Hindus, also called A4H, and Pramit Maakoday, Global President of A4H. Addressing a large gathering of Hindus at the temple, Congressman McGovern recognized the deep contributions of the community, from advancing innovation and economic growth to strengthening civic and social fabric. McGovern said, quote, “When a temple is threatened, it is not just an attack on a building. It is an attack on one of our country’s fundamental promises: the right to practice faith without fear." His remarks come at a time of heightened concern around rising bigotry and attacks on places of worship nationwide. He underscored the need to protect religious institutions and ensure that every community feels safe, seen, and supported. The gathering represents voices for peace, fosters cross-cultural understanding, and ensures that the values of justice and unity remain at the center of public life. Sri Lakshmi Temple is built through the collective contributions of thousands. McGovern was presented with a vigraha of Devi Sri Lakshmi during the Navaratri celebrations, symbolizing the importance of female strength. Temple priests also gifted him a coin of Sri Ganesha. Ramesh Kapur, Pramit Maakoday, and Dr. Thalanki spoke about Hindu concepts such as ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ ‘Dharma,’ and ‘Karma,’ describing Hindu faith as inclusive and for the betterment of humanity.
