Modi Meets Trump At G7 Summit To Accelerate Talks On Bilateral Trade Agreement
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the USA President Donald Trump on the margins of the G7 Summit in France on 17 June 2026 to review global developments and bilateral issues. They agree to accelerate the pace and process of concluding the bilateral trade agreement that the US and India announced in February 2026 and hope to conclude in 2026. Modi and Trump said through their officials they were satisfied with significant progress made in negotiations towards an interim bilateral trade agreement. They have asked officials to push the process to achieve a balanced, mutually beneficial, and commercially meaningful agreement. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will visit India the week of 22nd June 2026. Just as during the G7 Summit, Modi underscored the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce in the Strait of Hormuz and the need to ensure the safety of seafarers. But, with the US-Iran agreement announced, and just prior to Trump signing the document in France, Modi praised Trump for finally ending the ongoing conflict in West Asia and restoring peace and stability across the broader region. Modi and Trump publicly spoke of their commitment to strengthen the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and continue working on global geostrategic issues. Earlier during a photo-op, Trump and Modi sat exchanging words of mutual admiration. On the one hand, they talked about being, quote unquote, "very close" to finalising a trade deal. On the other hand, President Trump told reporters Modi is a good man but a tough negotiator, adding also that Trump and the US will support Prime Minister Modi, including defending India against any attacks.
