India transforms 31 cities & completes 43 under Smart Cities Mission

The Indian government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that of the 100 selected cities under the Smart Cities Mission, 31 have been converted to 'smart' cities under a five-year project that started in 2016. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said that 43 cities are near completion. The remaining 26 cities will take some more time to become 'smart'.

The Smart Cities Mission envisages improving the quality of life in 100 cities by providing efficient services, robust infrastructure, and sustainable solutions. The project was to be completed in four phases. The mission does not develop an entire city but takes on area-wise development. This includes redevelopment and green spaces without demolishing old structures and developing a model to be adopted by other cities.

The 'Smart City Mission' began with 20 cities selected in January 2016. The same year, 40 cities were added. By June 2017, 30 more were added, and finally, in January 2018, another 10 were included. Various deadline extensions extended the period of completion to 31st March 2025. Now, it is reported that till December 2025, 31 cities have been transformed into smart cities at a cost of ₹59,385 crore, or US dollars 6.75 billion, in about 10 years.

The 31 cities declared 'Smart Cities' include Agartala, Agra, Atal Nagar, Bareilly, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Dahod, Erode, Indore, Jabalpur, Jhansi, Kohima, Madurai, Moradabad, Patna, Pune, Rajkot, Ranchi, Salem, Shivamogga, Solapur, Surat, Tuticorin, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur, Tumakuru, Udaipur, Vadodara and Varanasi. The maximum amount has been spent on Indore, Tripura, Surat, Varanasi, Bhopal and Rajkot.

The 43 cities where work is nearly complete include Visakhapatnam, Guwahati, Bhagalpur, Panaji, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Shimla, Jammu, Bengaluru, Davangere, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, among others.
