BJP drives Mamta out of Bengal and wins Assam & Puducherry; Actor Vijay wins Tamil Nadu
Election results in 5 states of India have changed the political demography of India. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi swept to power in India's West Bengal state, zoomed back to power in the northeast's biggest state of Assam, and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner AINRC staged a comeback in Puducherry. In the other two states, the Indian National Congress (INC) party staged its return, albeit after 10 years, with a comfortable win together with partner Indian Union Muslim League, while Tamil Nadu voters were stunned by electing current blockbuster star Vijay and his TVK party to an unprecedented win as the single largest party. Now, the winners will hold closed-door meetings to align with various supporting parties, particularly in the case of Tamil Nadu, to define allies, and the winning legislators will elect their leader, who will then be appointed Chief Minister in the respective states. The Election Commission of India declared the following positions based on counting using electronic voting machines. But counting is done meticulously and takes time due to millions of voters in the 5 states. In West Bengal, of the 292 seats contested and counted out of 294, the BJP stunned even those supporting it by winning 106 seats and leading in 100. Outgoing Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee's TMC party merely won 44 and was leading in 37, a huge defeat. Congress barely bagged 2 seats, and CPIM was leading in 1. AJUP won 2. In Assam, of the 123 seats in the 126-member assembly, BJP comfortably bagged 80 seats and led in 2. Congress, on the other hand, won a mere 12 and led in 7. BOPF and AGP were at 9 and 8 wins, respectively, and leading in 1 and 2, respectively. AIUDF bagged 2 seats. In Tamil Nadu, a scintillating victory was scored by controversial actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay—popularly known as 'Thalapathy'—and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Vijay, who has delivered 8 blockbuster films so far, made an explosive entry on the political scene with the TVK party winning 66 seats, leading in 40. This is a landmark turnaround in the politics of the state dominated by DMK, ADMK, and Congress over decades. DMK only won 32 and was leading in 28 seats. ADMK won 26 and was leading in 21 seats. Congress won 2 and leads in 3 seats, and so also does the PMK. In the adjoining state of Puducherry, of the 26 seats counted out of a total of 30 seats in the state, the AINRC romped back to power, winning 10 seats and leading in 2, with the support of its NDA partner BJP, which won 4 seats. They are likely to bag the support of independents to form the government. In Kerala, the Indian National Congress party reclaimed rule of the state after 10 years and will now run the government with IUML as part of the United Democratic Front. Congress won 63 seats, the IUML 22. The CPM won 26 and the CPI 8. Kerala Congress won 7. In a historic victory speech for the BJP, at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the defeat in Bengal of Mamta Banerjee's TMC party a victory against violence and against opposition parties not supporting the recent bill in Parliament to ensure reservation of parliamentary seats for women. Modi also said that voters across India are voting for the BJP and its allies as they begin to believe his call to make India a ‘Viksit Bharat,’ or a developed nation, by 2047 when India completes 100 years of independence. The Indian Prime Minister did admit that the elections were politically charged, but due to the deployment of forces, there was no widespread violence or loss of lives and property. He appealed to all political parties, including his, to now accept the verdict of the elections and peacefully go about setting up the state governments. The BJP now directly governs 16 states—West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Manipur, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
