Bullet train up the game for Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad connectivity
India’s taking the bullet train connectivity to a game-changing southern corridor with plans to connect Bengaluru with Chennai and Hyderabad. With Japan taking the lead to support this transformation, reports say this will be a game-changer for travel, business, and economic activity. At the Japan-Indian Mobility Summit 2026, Watanabe Ikko, director for India's trade policy bureau of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), compared this sector to the Tokyo-Nagoya bullet train. Japan has already supported Bengaluru through JICA loans for Namma Metro Phase 2. S. Selvakumar, principal secretary for Karnataka's commerce and industries department, said the state is working on mobility innovation with over 800 R&D centers, global capability hubs, and policies like the Clean Mobility Policy 2025–2030. Karnataka wishes to deepen engagement with Japanese industry to accelerate next-generation mobility solutions. NITI Aayog member VK Saraswat urged collaboration beyond infrastructure toward technology co-creation in hydrogen mobility, smart transport, next-generation vehicles, and integrated mobility platforms, noting that India and Japan can jointly advance sustainable, decarbonized mobility solutions.
