Modi Inaugurates Micron Semiconductor Plant in Gujarat - PIOTV
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 28 February 2026, inaugurated India’s very first Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging (ATMP) facility set up by US company’s India subsidiary, Micron Semiconductor Technology India Private Limited, in Sanand in Gujarat. It is a significant leap in India’s semiconductor manufacturing with commercial production and first delivery of made-in-India semiconductor memory modules. Modi said the semiconductor facility, together with the outcome of India’s AI Impact Summit, marks India’s entry into the big league in electronics and digital transformation. Modi said the world knows that the microchip is the regulator of the 21st century. India has now established a firm foothold from software to hardware global value chains. Modi called the Micron facility a symbol of a crucial partnership between India and the United States. High-profile US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, was present during Modi’s inauguration. Indian Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said that with semiconductor manufacturing, India is an established player on the global map. Electronics manufacturing has grown sixfold, and electronics exports have recorded eightfold growth. Mobile phones are now among India’s top exported items. Chips designed in India will now be manufactured in India. The project saw an investment of over 22,500 crore rupees. The project was started with a groundbreaking in September 2023. It has nearly 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, ranking it among the largest raised-floor cleanrooms in the world.
