Uttar Pradesh Allocates Rs 750 Crore for Jewar Airport as Operations Hub
The Uttar Pradesh state government in India has allocated 750 crore Indian rupees, or approximately 85 million US dollars, to upgrade the new international airport at Jewar near Delhi. The Jewar airport will complement Delhi's existing aviation network to meet rising passenger and cargo demands across the national capital region. UP Finance Minister Suresh Khanna said the state will develop Jewar not only as a full-scale international airport but also as an aviation innovation and research center, alongside serving as a major maintenance and operations hub. Nearly Rs 700 crore will be utilized for land acquisition and Rs 50 crore for construction-related works, primarily supporting the third and fourth phases of land acquisition. The airport is being built in four phases under the public-private partnership (PPP) model by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG. Construction under Phase 1 is complete, and the airport is awaiting its aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). After full expansion, the total number of runways will increase to five from the initially approved two. The airport would be able to handle 12 million passengers annually in Phase 1, with capacity scaling up to 70 million per year after all four phases are complete. Overall, India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, has earmarked Rs 2,111 crore, or US $240 million, for the civil aviation department for 2026–27. The capital expenditure is envisaged at Rs 100 crore for construction and Rs 1,000 crore for land acquisition to expand and strengthen airstrips across the state. In the religious city of Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama, an allocation of 5 crores of rupees, or 600,000 US dollars, has been made for making the approach road, with 2 crores of rupees for land acquisition. A second terminal is being constructed at the airport.
