India appoints former Minister Dinesh Trivedi as High Commissioner to Bangladesh

After the dramatic changes in Bangladesh during the last years, India has picked a seasoned politician, former Union minister Dinesh Trivedi, to be India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

Trivedi is known for his strong policy interventions. He is a Bengali and understands the country and region well. He is a former Member of Parliament from West Bengal's Barrackpore who joined the BJP in 2021 after leaving the Trinamool Congress.

Analysts said Trivedi's appointment also signals New Delhi's move to give top priority to ties with the neighbouring country, including in areas of political channels for sensitive engagements.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman was recently on his first trip to Delhi since the new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman came to power. Khalilur viewed the future of bilateral ties through the prism of what he called the "slowly but surely" concept.
