India-US Trade Deal Talks Enter Final Phase as Top Negotiators Meet in Delhi

India and the USA began accelerating final trade negotiations with the visit of the US Chief Negotiator in Delhi from 1st through 4th June 2026. India and the USA had announced a broad framework of the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) on 7th February 2026.

The Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced that the Delhi talks start the process of finalising details of the proposed Interim Agreement and carrying forward the discussions. Some of the details under the Interim Agreement have to be fine-tuned. A statement said multiple areas such as Market Access, Non-Tariff Measures, Customs and Trade Facilitation, Investment Promotion, Economic Security Alignment, will be discussed.

In the joint statement in February, the two countries had reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to continue negotiations for the broader India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement.

An Indian delegation visited Washington, DC, from 20th to 23rd April 2026 for the first meeting.

The focus of the upcoming visit will be on several key trade and economic issues, including market access, customs procedures, non-tariff barriers, trade facilitation measures and investment promotion. The emphasis will also be to strengthen the bilateral strategic and economic partnership. Importantly, during the first ever visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in May has been to highlight all these issues and moving them forward earnestly and quickly.

Officials need to resolve pending trade-related matters while exploring opportunities for deeper economic cooperation.
