Trump calls ties with India ‘most important’ as Sergio Gor is sworn-in as US Ambassador to India
US President Donald Trump has labelled ties with India as ‘most important’ while swearing in Sergio Gor as the new US Ambassador to India, asking Gor to further strengthen strategic, economic, and security ties. Trump presided over the swearing in ceremony in the Oval Office of the White House. Vice President J D Vance administered the oath of office to Sergio Gor. Trump read a long speech before the ceremony, emphasizing that Indo-US partnership was of vital importance. He said he would like to see deepening of the "fantastic relationship" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gor’s position is not just Ambassador to India. But, as a trusted confidant and envoy of Trump he will serve as special envoy to South and Central Asia. Trump in his words called the responsibility ‘a big deal’ going on to add that and ‘Sergio will handle it better than anybody could’. Attending the ceremony were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary Scott Bessent, Attorney General Pam Bondi and US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, Erika Kirk and several senators. Gor was nominated in August 2025. Gor told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during his confirmation hearing that India is ‘one of the most important relationship has in the world.’ In a rare gesture, Gor visited India in October and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, EAM S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval.
