India-Ghana ties elevated to comprehensive partnership: Modi receives 24th honour from a nation |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Accra, Ghana, on 2nd July and was accorded a ceremonial and colourful welcome. In a special gesture, Prime Minister Modi was received by President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama at the airport. This is the first visit by any Indian Prime Minister in last 30 years. Prime Minister Modi was bestowed the highest civilian honour by the President of Ghana. This is the 24 international honours and counting for Modi, surpassing any other head of government in the world. Officials said this speaks of India’s and Modi’s growing friendship and influence with partner nations around the world. Indian Diaspora and Ghanian citizens celebrated India-Ghana friendship. Modi received a rousing welcome by Indian Diaspora in Ghana, who seemed visibly overjoyed with the visit. Joining the celebrations were Ghanians who have developed a fondness for Indian culture, traditions, art, cuisine, couture and growing trade and commerce ties with India.
Prime Minister Modi and President Mahama had a fruitful round of bilateral discussions with productive outcomes. Modi and Mahama announced that bilateral ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Partnership. Four Memoranda of Understanding were signed. First on Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP) to promote greater cultural understanding and exchanges in art, music, dance, literature, and heritage. Second between Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) & Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) aimed at enhancing cooperation in standardization, certification, and conformity assessment. Third between Institute of Traditional & Alternative Medicine (ITAM), Ghana and Institute of Teaching & Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), India, to collaborate in traditional medicine education, training, and research. Fourth and final one on Joint Commission Meeting to institutionalize high-level dialogue and review bilateral cooperation mechanisms on a regular basis.
