India-US full FTA deal negotiations continue |
India and the USA are continuing to thrash out the full big Free Trade Agreement (FTA) without stress of a deadline. Reports suggest and insiders confirm that an interim FTA to show progress is neither confirmed nor out of question. US President Donald Trump had announced that a bilateral FTA was close to being done. India had also strongly hinted at that in the month of June. However, some stickling points from past negotiations, including some new posturing by US, indicate that the deadline for a full and final FTA may have moved by two to three months. That India and the US may stay out of tariff dispute has many reasons. Among them the fact that India is a big defence buyer and a more than geo-political strategic partner. President Trump has issued letters on final tariffs to many countries but India hasn’t been on cited or talked about on any list. The biggest stickling factor is India’s reluctance to reduce tariffs on US farm goods. India would like to see some uniformity on its stance, having concluded free trade agreements with more than two dozen countries.
