Japanese E-10 bullet trains for Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor |
Japan’s E5 Shinkansen bullet trains will be used for trials on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. And, reports say the newer E10 variant will be commissioned finally on the route in 2030. Interestingly, the E10 trains will debut simultaneously in India and Japan. The 508-km corridor, built with Japanese Shinkansen technology, is on track for commercial launch in 2027, with the first prototype expected by 2026. Getting the latest trains and technology is symbolic of strategic partnership between Japan and India. Reports say that India may now opt for a tailored mix with more domestic partners alongside Japan. A complete signalling and telecommunication (S&T) system contract was recently awarded to vendors offering European technology with Indian partners. In parallel, talks with Japanese companies are continuing on the supply of Shinkansen trainsets. Trials with E5 variant Shinkansen trainsets will ascertain their feasibility, and identify any modifications needed in the under-development E10 trainsets. Indian government will use the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for developing a bullet train capable of reaching speeds of up to 280 kmph. The railway production unit has partnered with defence public sector enterprise - BEML to produce these trains.
