Modi says India`s eastern states engines of growth |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated new development projects worth over ₹7,000 crore in Bihar, where local assembly polls are likely in October-November 2025. Modi said at a rally in Motihari in Bihar state on 18 July 2025 that eastern states will be engines of growth for the country. Modis thrust is on winning and keeping India`s eastern states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, that with high population but among the poorest in India. Projects included are rail, road, rural development, fisheries, electronics and information technology sectors. The union government under Modi has allocated nearly ₹9 trillion for the state`s development versus ₹2 trillion in the decade earlier. During the 11-year reign of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, he said 40 million houses were built in India of which 6 million are in Bihar. Modi also spoke about benefits received by women and farmers in Bihar under central schemes. The Jan Dhan Yojana for financial inclusion benefited about 35 million women who were also opened new bank accounts. In 45 days just past, over 24,000 self-help groups in the state have received more than ₹1,000 crore in assistance, through such accounts.
Impact shows 20,00,000 women in Bihar became “Lakhpati didis” with a net worth of over ₹ 100,000. The PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana for farmers saw ₹3.5 trillion disbursed in India, and in Motihari alone, over 500,000 farmers received ₹1,500 crore. The Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana, recently approved by the Union cabinet, will identify, prioritise, and provide financial benefits to farmers in 100 districts that have agriculture potential but lack productivity and farmer income. Rail projects include the development of infrastructure for maintenance of Vande Bharat trains at Patliputra,and automatic signalling on Bhatni-Chhapra Gramin rail line (114 kilometer) to streamline train operations. The Prime Minister also inaugurated a new Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) facility at Darbhanga and an Incubation centre of STPI at Patna for IT startups.
