Modi gets Namibia’s highest civilian award, his 27th such global honour |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up a five-nation whirlwind tour accepting the 27th global honour when he was conferred Namibia’s highest civilian award on 9th July 2025. Modi paid a state visit to Namibia 8th and 9th July and was given a rousing welcome by the Namibian government and the Indian diaspora. President of Namibia, Madam Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, decorated Modi with the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, the first Indian leader to be given this award.
Modi said the award was given to the 1.4 billion people of India, praised historic and growing bilateral ties, hoped to embolden ties between the nations’ younger generations, and signed four agreements to bolster bilateral cooperation in several areas, including energy and healthcare.
The two Memoranda of Understanding signed are for:
1. Setting up of Entrepreneurship Development Centre in Namibia
2. Cooperation in the field of Health and Medicine
Three bilateral announcements were made jointly as:
1. Namibia submitted letter of acceptance for joining Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure
2. Namibia submitted letter of acceptance for joining of Global Biofuels Alliance
3. Namibia becomes the first country globally to sign licensing agreement to adopt Unified Payment Interface (UPI) technology considered the biggest and most technologically advanced digital payment system in the world.
